About the Department:
The Office of International Programs and Services strives to promote global awareness by integrating international students, researchers, and faculty into the campus community. The office provides guidance on immigration, employment, and taxation to students and scholars at George Mason University. They also assist with adjustment issues and facilitate cross-cultural understanding through programs focusing on global themes.

About the Position:
The International Advisor is responsible for providing advising on federal regulations and non-immigrant status in the United States. They assist non-immigrants affiliated with George Mason University in accessing resources and achieving their academic, professional, and personal goals. Their work includes ensuring compliance with federal regulations governing non-immigrant students, scholars, and faculty under the university’s sponsorship.

Responsibilities:
– Assist non-immigrant students and/or faculty-sponsored by George Mason University with compliance to federal regulations, including providing advising services and evaluating nonimmigrant eligibility for benefits.
– Interface with key stakeholders to support students in maintaining their status and ensuring university compliance.
– Provide guidance on cultural adjustment, academic success, and other related issues.
– Ensure university compliance with federal regulations through the development and implementation of materials, training sessions, and information sessions.
– Participate in departmental initiatives to improve effectiveness and professional growth.

Required Qualifications:
– Master’s degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
– Experience working as an F-1 Designated School Official or J-1 Responsible Officer or Alternate Responsible Officer.
– Familiarity with cross-cultural communication and adjustment.
– Experience working with diverse student populations and managing data and records.
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
– Strong cross-cultural and interpersonal skills.
– Ability to research and analyze complex federal regulations and apply them to specific cases.
– Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
– Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
– Strong work habits and adherence to deadlines.
– Must be a US citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident.

Preferred Qualifications:
– Previous experience as a DSO/ARO.
– Experience creating content and working with web tools.
– Experience living, studying, or traveling abroad.
