The ELL Adviser is an International Specialist position that initially begins as a long-term role in Kiribati, but eventually transitions to a home-based position with regular visits to the country. The main focus in the early stages will be collaborating with the Ministry of Education (MoE) to develop and implement a Language and Literacy Learning Strategy.

Responsibilities in this role include working closely with the MoE, Mission schools, and other stakeholders to create a language and literacy learning strategy and implementation plan. It will also be important to ensure a coherent approach to teaching literacy (reading and writing) is agreed upon and embraced by schools and their communities. Another responsibility will be to support the review and updating of the school curriculum, starting with the early years and eventually incorporating climate change, disability inclusion, and gender equality considerations.

The selected candidate for this role should have a Masters of English Language or Education. They should also be a collaborative and constructive team member who listens and operates from a strength-based learning approach. An understanding of project and organizational risk management is important, as is knowledge of contemporary approaches to teaching literacy, organizational culture, and team development. Additionally, the ability to coach and build the capacities of adults in a culturally appropriate manner is necessary, as well as an understanding of how people learn and the influence of collectivist cultures like Kiribati on optimal learning approaches.
