Job Summary and Qualifications:

HIU is seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic, committed, and driven Vice President of Business and Finance to lead our institution into a bright future. With an exciting strategic plan and ambitious goals, we are looking for a collaborative team player whose role as a senior leader will impact peacebuilding efforts worldwide.

Responsibilities

Finance and Business

Collaborate closely with the President to oversee HIU’s financial landscape.

Engage with senior leaders to establish priorities, expand existing revenue streams, and create new business models that align with HIU’s mission.

Manage all aspects of HIU’s day-to-day financial operations and services, including budget development, cash management, grants financial management, and executive control over budgets. Also responsible for managing HIU’s endowment, including accounting, unitization, and audit.

Provide support to the Finance, Audit, and Investment Committees of the Board, including presenting financial statements, preparing meeting packets, and maintaining committee minutes.

Supervise the business and finance staff, ensuring their optimal performance through training and development.

Allocate resources based on operational needs while balancing institutional goals.

Oversee and support student billings and collections.

Lead and coordinate external financial audits and the preparation of audited financial statements by external auditors.

Coordinate with external auditors in the preparation of IRS Form 990.

Implement expense management strategies and establish and develop strong vendor relationships.

Create timely and accurate financial forecasts and long-term financial planning processes to predict HIU’s future growth.

Implement and maintain effective internal financial controls and compliance measures to safeguard university assets and ensure regulatory compliance.

Oversee payroll administration and the management of university benefits, such as health insurance and retirement plans.

Manage grant administration.

Establish and maintain relationships with external partners, including auditors, financial institutions, the Outsourced Chief Investment Officer, pension plan advisor, and other stakeholders.

Responsible for risk management and mitigation, including arranging appropriate insurance coverage and managing business-related risks.

Human Resources

Serve as a key HR official, working closely with the President and VPO to establish and maintain HR-related policies and procedures in alignment with industry best practices, standards, and applicable laws.

Lead employee benefits management, including annual renewal, open enrollment, and day-to-day administration.

Oversee HR-related legal claims and settlements.

Collaborate with the DEI officer to implement fair, equitable, and inclusive internal practices related to compensation and performance appraisals.

Develop, communicate, and implement HR policies, procedures, and initiatives, working with subject matter experts to revise handbooks and assist managers in policy interpretation and implementation.

Oversee recruitment and onboarding processes, providing opportunities for professional growth and team development.

Promote positive employee morale, collegiality, wellness, retention, and a sense of community.

Facilities

Provide leadership to the Director of Facilities and Campus Operations, overseeing all operations, maintenance, design, construction, and renovation of university facilities.

Other Duties as Assigned:

Provide backup support for the University’s major events and activities as needed.

Requirements:

Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively across all levels of the organization and deliver impactful presentations.

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Law, or related field; MBA or relevant advanced degree preferred. CPA preferred but not required.

Proven experience (7 years) in financial leadership.

Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategic financial plans that drive revenue growth.

Extensive experience in financial and budget management, preferably with knowledge of endowment accounting. Experience in higher education is strongly preferred.

Strong problem-solving skills and ability to organize and manage complex functions.

Proficiency in financial management software commonly used in higher education.

Knowledge of HR processes, compliance, and best practices.
