The National Archives

Application Deadline: Midnight, Tuesday, 12th November 2024

The National Archives, a non-ministerial government department, houses over a millennium of documents. Our team at CEE is driven by a passion for leveraging our expert understanding of these collections to inspire audiences and challenge their perceptions about archives. The Records Specialist for Diplomatic and International matters will be a key part of the CEE team, working with a diverse audience, including the public, students, academics, and the broader archive and government sectors, to utilize The National Archives’ records. In this role, you’ll cultivate a broad understanding of the National Archives’ records to assist with public inquiries both on-site and online. Furthermore, you’ll develop in-depth expertise in records related to British diplomacy and international relations from 1782 to today, providing specialized support.

The Foreign Office archives and its successors at The National Archives are among the most significant and complex collections for world history, playing a crucial role both in the UK and internationally. You’ll have a fervent interest in exploring these possibilities.

Your approach will be innovative and collaborative, aiming to uncover diverse voices and histories in line with The National Archives’ mission to be Inclusive, Entrepreneurial, and Disruptive. You’ll amass specialist knowledge to guide both community and academic researchers and collaborate on a variety of projects with colleagues across The National Archives, including those engaging with schools, government departments, research development, and our events and exhibitions program.

We seek candidates with specialized knowledge of British diplomatic and international history, acquired through academic or professional experiences, and familiarity with relevant historical collections. You should be adept at engaging in thoughtful discussions on challenging historical subjects, and articulate in communicating with a wide audience spectrum.

This position allows for a blend of onsite and home working, with an expectation to spend at least 60% of your work time at our Kew site. Some evenings and Saturdays work will be required to support public service and engagement activities, with compensatory time off arranged accordingly. You should also be willing to travel to other government departments as needed.

Benefits of working with us:

This role offers a fulfilling variety of experiences, from addressing inquiries in the reading room and developing cataloguing projects to expanding networks within the UK and global heritage sectors. You’ll take on responsibilities within the ‘Overseas and Defence’ team and the wider department, with opportunities to pursue individual projects and professional growth focused on accessing and understanding our collections.

You’ll receive support in enhancing your skills for managing collaborative projects, developing networks among research communities in the UK and beyond, and seeking grant funding for further activities.

At The National Archives, you’ll enjoy a collaborative working environment and the excellent Civil Service benefits package, which includes flexible working, an on-site gym, wellness resources, and the chance to join the Civil Service Alpha Pension Scheme.
