We are looking for a motivated and driven individual to join our Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) team as a Senior Programme Manager. This role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a team of experts focused on advancing and implementing our PPIE strategy. The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), partners with the NHS, universities, local government, other research funders, patients, and the public. NIHR finances, facilitates, and executes world-leading health and social care research that enhances health and wellbeing while promoting economic growth. We are also a significant contributor to applied health research in low- and middle-income countries. Our dedicated Patient and Public Involvement team carries out essential functions, including:
– Supporting research programs by recruiting public contributors to review applications and serve as committee members.
– Assisting program teams in monitoring the performance of research awards concerning PPIE contractual requirements.
– Offering support to public contributors, involvement leads, and program teams, including learning and development.
**Job Description**
The role also encompasses providing expert advice, guidance, and oversight for NIHR’s domestic and global health programs, infrastructure, schools, and units as they develop and execute their public/community involvement and engagement strategies. You will collaborate with colleagues across NIHR and beyond to foster shared resources, learning, and effective practices.
**Key Responsibilities**
– **PPIE Oversight & Expertise:** Offer guidance, coordination, and monitoring to support PPIE activities within NIHR initiatives managed by the NIHR Coordinating Centre.
– **Project Leadership:** Lead the recruitment of patients, carers, and service users for participation in NIHR funding decisions, both as reviewers and committee members.
– **Strategic Leadership:** Drive strategic priorities for engaging with people and communities across NIHR and contribute to cross-organizational policy development for a unified PPIE vision.
– **Team Management & Development:** Manage staff, including workforce planning, mentoring, and evaluation, to ensure efficient program delivery and professional growth.
– **Training & Support:** Develop and deliver resources, training, and support for researchers, program teams, and public partners through channels such as teleconferences, webinars, and emails.
– **Outreach & Engagement:** Lead community outreach and relationship-building with diverse groups to enhance engagement and capacity among PPIE leads, public partners, and researchers.
– **Annual Planning & Reporting:** Manage the creation, delivery, monitoring, and reporting of an annual involvement and engagement plan, continuously innovating for process improvement and impact enhancement.
– **External Relations:** Build networks with stakeholders across public, private, and voluntary sectors to support PPI activities, shared learning, and promote best practices.
– **Process Development:** Develop processes and documentation for recruiting and supporting public partners for funding committees, including creating forms and information packs.
– **Environmental Awareness & Innovation:** Stay updated on PPIE practices and research developments, promoting continuous improvement and innovation within the organization.
– **Efficiency Optimization:** Seek opportunities to enhance synergy and value across NIHR and non-NIHR contracts, contributing to efficiency and effectiveness.
– **Other Duties:** Complete additional responsibilities as assigned by the line manager, balanced with overall workload.
**Qualifications & Experience**

– Degree in humanities, arts, social sciences, or equivalent experience
– Knowledge and experience in patient and public involvement in the community, healthcare sector, or research
– Experience in project leadership and diversity
– Expertise in strategic development and policy
– Proficiency in planning, delivery, monitoring, reviewing, and reporting strategies
– Experience in working with the public and building stakeholder relationships

This is a full-time, permanent, hybrid role based in the office, requiring attendance at our offices at least four days a month, typically one day per week, with potential increases subject to team demands.
