Wellcome is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.
We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate.
These challenges need the bold research our funding supports, but they won’t be solved by science alone. We are looking for a Senior Manager in the Major International Programmes Team which leads Wellcome’s portfolio of major programmes in low- and middle-income countries, with a focus on Africa and Asia. We achieve this through:

- relationship building and management, including with international partners, funders and internal colleagues, brokering new networks and collaborations; and,
- building knowledge of supporting inclusive research and research systems in low resource settings and engagement with the MIPS programme investments within Wellcome.
This role will oversee a number of specific research projects in the Major International Programmes portfolio to enable alignment with Wellcome priorities and delivery of health impacts for those most affected in Africa and Asia.
In this role you will:
- Implement the initiation, oversee management and implementation of the Major International Programmes, acting as the day-to-day point of contact for your assigned programmes including liaison with external stakeholders and partners
- Coordinate the effective delivery of the assigned programmes by leading on work that ranges from direct oversight (performance, risk, governance) to convening, making funding recommendations and producing reports/reviews, ensuring specific operational issues are identified and managed.
- Drive active engagement between Major International Programmes and relevant matrix teams within Wellcome to ensure optimal alignment with Wellcome priorities and strategic engagement with these partners
- Convene internal and funded stakeholders to share learning from these programmes and their operational context in Africa and Asia through activities such as: implementing and assessing funding calls and commissions, convening groups, drafting reports
- Work to develop and deepen relationships both within Wellcome and with the wider research environment for the countries and region of the focus projects to optimize outcomes for Wellcome and for the programmes
- Be the owner of the risk and control environment for your area and be accountable for the quality of yours and your team’s outputs.
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Senior programme management experience, able to demonstrate a breadth of research programme and portfolio management expertise in a relevant field through relevant work experience in an academic, industrial, funding agency or charity setting.
- Experience of programme management and portfolio oversight in varied international settings, ideally in lower resource settings in Africa and/or Asia.
- Experience/knowledge of universities, funders and other relevant scientific and research organisations and communities, ideally in the health sector
- Experience of effective performance, assurance and risk management across programme portfolios
