University of Cambridge

**Department/Location:** Department of Engineering, Cambridge Graphene Centre, West Cambridge

The Quantum and Advanced Materials Technologies for a Sustainable Society (QAMSS) Strategic Research Initiative (SRI) unites Cambridge experts to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, enhance Cambridge’s visibility, and manage significant strategic grants. QAMSS supports partnerships through working groups representing complementary activities. These include Interdisciplinary Research Centres like the Cambridge Centre for Data-Driven Discovery, as well as Energy, Neurosciences, and Synthetic Biology initiatives; Strategic Research Initiatives such as Global Challenges and Trust in Technology; Strategic Research Networks like Digital Humanities; and Cross-School Initiatives, including Cambridge Digital Humanities, Cambridge Zero, and the Centre for Digital Built Britain. These initiatives uniquely champion a sustainable society.

The QAMSS-SRI Coordinator and Business Developer is accountable to the SRI Co-Chairs (Professors Atature, Ferrari, and Ducati, from the Departments of Physics, Engineering, and Materials Science and Metallurgy) and the QAMSS Steering Committee. Their role involves crafting strategy for the initiative and overseeing the SRI team to execute necessary activities. Key responsibilities include nurturing relationships with vital internal and external stakeholders to achieve shared goals and communicating business needs and market drivers from industry. This involves business development and communications for the Cambridge Graphene Centre (CGC), the Graphene Flagship, the Layered Materials Research Foundry, and other projects, accounting for half of the role’s focus.

Based in West Cambridge, the SRI coordinator will engage with departments and centers supporting the SRI initiative and facilitate inclusive activities and meetings using local resources. The SRI Chairs and Steering Committee will provide office and meeting spaces for the coordinator’s use.

The ideal candidate will possess a degree in a scientific or technical field relevant to the role, ideally at the PhD level or equivalent. Experience in new product or process development for industry is required, along with an understanding of company dynamics and the ability to align research with business objectives. Familiarity with the patenting process, technology transfer, and expertise in business development and B2B or academic-industry collaborations are essential. Excellent communication and IT skills are crucial, including web development, press release production, media interaction, and IP management. Experience in negotiations and coordinating collaborations within UK and EU projects is highly desirable.

QAMSS SRI and CGC are committed to addressing historical under-representation of women and minority groups in the Cambridge workforce. The Departments of Physics and Engineering proudly hold Athena-SWAN Gold and Silver Awards, respectively, for their commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion (ED&I). Applications from under-represented groups and candidates with a proven track record in addressing ED&I issues in research and education are strongly encouraged.
