OVERVIEW The International Student Support Adviser, Pre-Arrival, plays a critical role in supporting prospective and newly admitted international students as they prepare to begin their academic journey at The Pennsylvania State University. Positioned within Penn State Global and the International Student & Scholar Advising (ISSA) team, this Intermediate Professional role focuses on pre-arrival advisement, immigration processing, and compliance. The position contributes to institution-wide international enrollment and student success, with potential for hybrid work. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Provide pre-arrival services to prospective and newly admitted international students – Evaluate financial documentation and immigration credentials for visa eligibility – Issue F and J visa eligibility documents in the capacity of a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) – Advise students on immigration regulations and visa processes – Complete required immigration reporting and documentation – Communicate with international students, their families, and internal university stakeholders – Support immigration compliance and service delivery for a large international population across the university REQUIREMENTS WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS International students face complex immigration, financial, and logistical challenges before arriving in the United States, and effective pre-arrival support is essential to their success. This role helps ensure regulatory compliance while also providing clear, timely guidance that reduces uncertainty and risk for students and the institution. By supporting approximately 10,000 international students and scholars, the adviser directly contributes to Penn State’s global engagement and academic mission. BONUS: APPLICATION ADVICE – Emphasize any direct experience working with international students, particularly in pre-arrival, admissions, or immigration-related advising contexts – Highlight familiarity with F and J visa regulations, SEVIS reporting, or work as a DSO or ARO, if applicable – Demonstrate strong communication skills, especially your ability to explain complex regulatory information clearly to diverse audiences – Share examples of collaboration with multiple stakeholders, such as academic units, admissions teams, or compliance offices – Address your ability to manage high-volume caseloads while maintaining attention to detail and regulatory accuracy – If applicable, mention experience working in hybrid or remote advising environments and using digital communication tools
