About the team/job:
EMBL is a leading life sciences laboratory in Europe, comprised of over 110 independent research groups and service teams focused on molecular biology. It operates across six sites and is dedicated to performing basic research, providing training and services, developing new methods, and actively engaging in technology transfer.
The Data Science Centre at EMBL, launched in February 2022, is seeking an experienced Operations Manager to be based in Heidelberg. The Data Science Centre aims to expertly process, integrate, annotate, and manage biological research data generated across all EMBL sites. The role of the Data Science Centre is to support and promote EMBL’s missions by enabling scientists to make discoveries that benefit humanity through the analysis of complex biological data.
Your role:
As the Data Science Centre Manager, you will be responsible for organizing and managing projects and collaborations within the Data Science Centre. You will also oversee the progress of operations and ensure close collaboration and synergy among all EMBL sites and scientific domains. Your role will involve scientific project management, coordinating communication with project partners, grants management, and working closely with EMBL administration and collaborating institutions.
Responsibilities include:
– Coordinating tasks of the Data Science Centre and participating in future planning.
– Providing operational management for collaborations within EMBL and with external academic institutions.
– Supporting DSC leadership by organizing meetings and preparing communications.
– Participating in project strategy and management planning, documenting results, and communicating within the team(s).
– Communicating project results to scientific colleagues, external collaborators, and the general public.
– Monitoring project progress, developing work plans, and illustrating project schedules.
– Writing internal reports and assisting in writing grants.
– Communicating with funders and reporting to funding agencies.
– Driving communication and interpersonal relationships across the international setting of EMBL.
– Budget administration, including monitoring budgets and approving shopping carts.
– Assisting with personnel matters such as approving timesheets and annual leave.
The Data Science Centre Manager will report directly to the Head of Data Science.
You have:
The ideal candidate should have an advanced university degree in life sciences or equivalent, with a PhD being advantageous. Prior experience in managing scientific projects across multiple international sites is required. Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently and proactively in a dynamic scientific environment are essential. Fluency in English is necessary, and proficiency in other languages, especially German, is a plus. Excellent interpersonal skills, creativity, and a collaborative team spirit are also required. Some travel within Europe may be necessary.

– Background in science administration, preferably in an international environment.
– Experience in project management and grant writing.
– Advanced knowledge of office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Drive.
