**Position Overview**
The Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS) at Yale University is dedicated to supporting over 8,000 international students, faculty, staff, and their dependents. OISS provides assistance with employment, immigration, and cultural adjustment, offering a broad spectrum of services to help them integrate into life at Yale and in New Haven. As Yale’s authoritative body for immigration matters, OISS aids in achieving and maintaining legal nonimmigrant status in the U.S.
**Role Description**
The OISS Adviser will be part of a team responsible for providing comprehensive services in areas like:
– **Immigration advising for students and scholars**: Support in compliance with DHS/SEVIS and Department of State regulations.
– **Institutional compliance**: Ensuring Yale’s adherence to federal regulations and university policies.
– **Liaison duties**: Acting as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternative Responsible Officer (ARO) while coordinating with Yale departments and federal agencies.
**Principal Responsibilities**
1. Advise F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars on immigration status maintenance and employment, including graduation-related authorization.
2. Customize services for school-based international populations, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
3. Serve as a DHS-authorized DSO and ARO, maintaining up-to-date knowledge of U.S. immigration laws.
4. Collaborate with university departments to ensure comprehensive service delivery.
5. Foster good relations with students and faculty, providing non-immigration-related support for acclimation.
6. Develop strategies for enhancing advising services, leveraging technology, and optimizing case management processes.
7. Participate in local and national conferences, contributing to major OISS projects and programs.
8. Innovate business processes within OISS to enhance service quality.
**Required Education and Experience**
– A Bachelor’s Degree in a related field.
– Three years of experience advising international students/scholars in an academic setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
**Required Skills and Abilities**
– Ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team in a dynamic environment.
– Strong intercultural skills and experience in multicultural settings.
– Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
– Exceptional organizational skills, with the capability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
– Proficiency in computer literacy, including Excel, data entry, and database management.
– Experience with F-1, J-1, and H-1B regulations, as well as other employment-based immigration categories.
– Familiarity with international student/scholar software (e.g., TDS, Sunapsis, ISSM) and institutional databases like Banner.
– Experience living abroad, knowledge of a second language, and intercultural communication skills are advantageous.
