**International Student & Scholar Advisor**

**Job Summary:**

Reporting to an Associate Director/Director within the Office of Global Services (OGS) at Northeastern University, the International Student and Scholar Advisor (ISSA) offers advisory services to international students and scholars holding F/J non-immigrant status. Acting as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), the ISSA utilizes the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to perform essential functions, collect data, generate reports, and more.

**Responsibilities of the ISSA include:**

– Provide guidance and support to F-1 students, J-1 students, and J-1 scholars to help maintain their non-immigrant status, secure employment authorization, and adapt academically, socially, and personally.
– Manage and update student and scholar records in SEVIS (Forms I-20 and DS-2019), including documenting reportable events as mandated by federal regulations.
– Stay informed of current federal regulations, SEVIS procedures, Northeastern academic policies, and OGS policies to offer timely, comprehensive advice.
– Guide NU academic departments and relevant contacts on regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and OGS procedures.
– Advise students on logistical matters such as obtaining a social security number and applying for a U.S. driver’s license/state ID.
– Serve as a liaison with government agencies like the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Student & Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), the Department of State (DOS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) on student requests, data corrections, and travel issues.
– Develop and deliver training sessions on regulations for students, scholars, and relevant colleagues.
– Collaborate with academic and co-op/career advisors to ensure comprehensive international student advising.
– Partner with OGS academic services and programming support teams to facilitate orientation programming related to immigration compliance and provide initial guidance on F and J regulations for new students.
– Engage in the development, design, and implementation of programs and systems that enhance the experience of international students and scholars at Northeastern.
– Offer consistent in-person advising support and represent OGS at the Boston campus, participate in meetings, and assist with on-campus events.
– Participate in the DSO on-call rotation.
– Perform other tasks as assigned.

**Required Qualifications:**

– Bachelor’s degree
– One to three years of experience as a DSO/ARO, directly working with SEVIS to manage documentation, maintain records, and comply with regulatory reporting requirements
– U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency (required to be a DSO/ARO)
– Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 regulations and professional experience working with international student and scholar populations across all phases of the international student experience (pre-arrival, enrollment, post-completion employment)
– Capability and readiness to multitask and organize high-volume caseloads
– Strong verbal and written communication skills
– Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while being an effective team member
– Awareness of privacy laws and ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality in student/scholar advising

**Additional Qualifications:**

– Proficiency in various computer software systems and applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications
– Familiarity with batching systems such as SUNAPSIS
– Strong intercultural communication and interpersonal skills
– Experience studying or working abroad, or other international living experiences
– Knowledge of additional languages
– Previous experience with academic advising
