About the Opportunity:
JOB SUMMARY:
The International Student and Scholar Advisor (ISSA) position at Northeastern University’s Office of Global Services (OGS) provides advising services to international students and scholars on F/J visas. The ISSA serves as the Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) and utilizes the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) for various functions.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ISSA INCLUDE:
– Advising international students and scholars on F-1 and J-1 visas to ensure their non-immigrant status is maintained.
– Counseling and advising international students and scholars on immigration matters, employment authorization, acculturation, academic and personal adjustment, etc.
– Providing guidance to academic departments and key contacts on regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and OGS policies and processes.
– Assisting students in obtaining social security numbers.
– Collaborating with academic and Co-op advisors to support comprehensive student advising.
– Keeping up-to-date knowledge of federal regulations and SEVIS procedures to provide up-to-date advising.
– Participating in orientation programs related to immigration compliance and reviewing F and J regulations with new students.
– Designing and delivering regulatory training for students, scholars, and colleagues.
– Collaborating with students, scholars, and other university offices to enhance the university’s global network.
– Contributing to the development and implementation of programs and systems to support the international student and scholar experience.
– Serving within the DSO on-call rotation.
– Performing other assigned duties.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
– Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a field related to international education, social sciences, or humanities.
– Knowledge of immigration regulations and professional experience working with international student populations throughout all stages of their experience.
– One to three years’ experience as a DSO/ARO working with SEVIS for record processing and regulatory reporting.
– Ability and willingness to multitask and work in a fast-paced innovative environment.
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
– Ability to work independently and as a team member.
– Knowledge of privacy laws and ability to maintain confidentiality when advising students/scholars.
– U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency required to be a DSO/ARO.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
– Knowledge of various computer software systems and applications, including Microsoft Office and web-based applications.
– Familiarity with batching systems such as SUNAPSIS.
– Previous study/work abroad or living experience overseas.
– Knowledge of a second or third language.
– Strong intercultural communication and interpersonal skills.
– Prior experience with academic advising.
