International Student & Scholar Advisor

Job Summary:
The International Student and Scholar Advisor (ISSA) functions under the guidance of an Associate Director/Director within the Office of Global Services (OGS) at Northeastern University. The ISSA provides essential advising services to international students and scholars holding F/J non-immigrant status, acting in the capacity of a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). The role involves using the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) for various tasks such as data collection and report generation.

Key Responsibilities:
– Advise and support F-1 students, J-1 students, and J-1 scholars on maintaining non-immigrant status, employment authorizations, integration issues, and overall adaptation.
– Manage and update SEVIS records to reflect federally reportable events accurately.
– Stay informed on federal regulations, SEVIS procedures, and both Northeastern and OGS policies to provide timely, multifaceted guidance.
– Provide regulatory guidance to Northeastern University academic departments and integral contacts.
– Assist students with obtaining essential documents like social security numbers and U.S. driver’s licenses/state IDs.
– Maintain liaisons with governmental agencies, including DHS, SEVP, DOS, CBP, and USCIS, for student-related matters.
– Develop and deliver training on regulations for students, scholars, and staff.
– Collaborate with academic and career advisors to ensure holistic support for international students.
– Work with OGS teams on orientation initiatives related to immigration compliance.
– Proactively contribute to initiatives enhancing the international student and scholar experience.
– Provide advising support on the ground and represent OGS at a U.S. Global network campus.
– Participate in the DSO on-call rotation.
– Undertake additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s degree.
– One to three years of experience as a DSO/ARO with SEVIS documentation processing and compliance.
– U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (required for DSO/ARO roles).
– Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 regulations with experience in international student support.
– Multitasking ability and organizational skills for managing extensive caseloads.
– Strong verbal and written communication skills.
– Ability to work independently and as part of a functional team in a fast-paced environment.
– Familiarity with privacy laws and capacity to maintain confidentiality.

Additional Qualifications:
– Proficiency in various software systems including Microsoft Office and web-based applications.
– Experience with batching systems such as SUNAPSIS.
– Strong intercultural and interpersonal communication skills.
– Previous experience living, studying, or working abroad.
– Proficiency in additional languages.
– Background in academic advising.
