**International Student & Scholar Advisor**

**Job Summary**

Under the guidance of an Associate Director/Director at the Office of Global Services (OGS) at Northeastern University, the International Student and Scholar Advisor (ISSA) offers advisory services to international students and scholars holding F/J non-immigrant status. As a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), the ISSA uses the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) to execute necessary functions, collect data, and create reports.

**Responsibilities of the ISSA include:**

– Advising and supporting F-1 students, J-1 students, and J-1 scholars to maintain their non-immigrant status, employment authorization, cultural adaptation, and more.
– Managing and updating student and scholar records in SEVIS, including reportable events as mandated by federal regulations.
– Keeping current with federal regulations, SEVIS procedures, Northeastern academic policies, and OGS policies to provide comprehensive advising.
– Guiding NU academic departments and key contacts on regulatory requirements and institutional and OGS policies.
– Advising students on logistical matters such as obtaining a social security number and a U.S. driver’s license/state ID.
– Coordinating with government agencies, including DHS, SEVP, DOS, CBP, and USCIS, regarding student requests and travel.
– Designing and delivering regulatory training for students, scholars, and colleagues.
– Communicating with academic and co-op/career advisors to support comprehensive international student advising.
– Collaborating with OGS academic services and programming support teams on orientation programming related to immigration compliance.
– Contributing to the development and implementation of programs and systems to support the international student and scholar experience at Northeastern.
– Providing advising support and representing OGS at a U.S. Global network campus, participating in campus-wide meetings, and assisting with events.
– Participating in the DSO on-call rotation.
– Performing other duties as assigned.

**Required Qualifications**

– Bachelor’s degree.
– One to three years of experience as a DSO/ARO, working with SEVIS to process documentation, maintain records, and meet regulatory reporting requirements.
– U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency is required to be a DSO/ARO.
– Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 regulations and professional experience with international student and scholar populations across the student lifecycle.
– Ability to multitask and develop organizational systems for managing a high-volume caseload.
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
– Capacity to work independently in a fast-paced environment and as a team member.
– Understanding of privacy laws and ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.

**Additional Qualifications**

– Proficiency in using various computer software systems, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications.
– Familiarity with batching systems such as SUNAPSIS.
– Strong intercultural communication and interpersonal skills.
– Experience studying or working abroad or living overseas.
– Knowledge of a second or third language.
– Prior experience in academic advising.
