International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) at the University of Minnesota is at the forefront of the university’s efforts to create a globally focused learning environment. The team of international student and scholar advisors are dedicated to meeting the unique needs of the university’s international population, offering expert assistance in immigration and intercultural matters. Their culturally competent immigration advising benefits international students, faculty, staff, scholars, and their dependents.
This particular position is a member of the ISSS Scholar Advising team, spending approximately 20% of their time also providing student advising. The primary focus of this role is to offer expert guidance and support to international faculty, staff, scholars, and the departments sponsoring them across the University’s five campuses in relation to employment and immigration regulations. There may also be involvement in immigration advising and support for international students at the Twin Cities campus. Key responsibilities for this position include immigration advising and counseling, data management, document production, communications and outreach, programming, and professional development and service.
In terms of qualifications, a Bachelor’s degree in international education, law, human resources, counseling, or a related field is required, along with four years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, if the candidate holds a Master’s degree in one of these fields, they should have at least two years of relevant professional experience. Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills are necessary, as are excellent attention to detail, the ability to handle a high workload and meet sensitive deadlines, problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and technical proficiency. The candidate should also have the ability to work effectively with a diverse team, as well as relevant multicultural experience, either through work, study, travel abroad, or domestic experiences. Additionally, being a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident is necessary to serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO), as per federal government requirements.
Preferred qualifications for this position include at least two years of experience as an international advisor/counselor in a higher education setting, a working knowledge of non-immigrant student, scholar, and employment-based visas, experience with Sunapsis and/or PeopleSoft, familiarity with UMN HR policies and practices, proficiency in delivering information at workshops or training seminars, demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate programs, and fluency in one or more languages in addition to English.
