Job Title: International Student Advisor

Job Summary:
The International Student Advisor plays a crucial role in guiding international students and scholars through the complexities of immigration, personal, and cultural adaptation, along with navigating university procedures and policies. This role requires in-depth knowledge of federal immigration regulations and the ability to update and manage the SEVIS database for international student and scholar records. Additional responsibilities may include participating in orientations, advising student clubs, and managing specific programs like the J Scholar Program or Sponsored Student Program.

Responsibilities:

  1. Join the University of Utah Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) team.
  2. Update and maintain SEVIS records to ensure university compliance with federal immigration laws and student/scholar benefits.
  3. Provide guidance to students and scholars on immigration, cultural, and educational matters while demonstrating sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and language abilities.
  4. Contribute to the development and communication of university policies and procedures related to international students and scholars.
  5. Organize workshops and seminars to share information on immigration and other relevant topics with the campus community.
  6. Support strategic goals and projects within the ISSS office.
  7. Participate in one or more office teams such as the web team, orientation team, assessment team, or sponsored student program team.
  8. Take on additional responsibilities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field plus two years of relevant experience or equivalent (one year of education can substitute for two years of experience).
  • Prior experience in advising, counseling, or teaching is preferred.
  • Applicants must be US citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents due to federal regulations for SEVIS Designated School Officials.

Preferences:

  • Master’s degree in a related field with 2 years of experience as a DSO, ARO, RO, or PDSO.
  • Proficiency in one or more languages besides English.
  • Experience living or working outside the U.S.
  • Familiarity with SUNAPSIS and PeopleSoft student information systems.
  • Ability to interpret immigration policies related to F and J visa holders.
  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking and writing.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet strict deadlines.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with campus colleagues and departments.

Special Instructions for International Applicants:

  • Highlight any international experience, such as studying or working abroad, and how it enhances your ability to assist international students.
  • Demonstrate language skills, particularly if you speak languages that are commonly spoken by the university’s international student population.
  • Emphasize any cross-cultural communication skills and adaptability from your international experiences.
  • If applicable, explain your understanding of SEVIS and other U.S. immigration systems from both an international and compliance perspective.

  • It’s a full-time position with a typical schedule of Monday through Friday, 8-5, with some evenings and weekends for special events.
  • Salary ranges from $45,000 to $50,000 annually.
