**International Student Advisor Job Summary**
The International Student Advisor plays a pivotal role in the International Student & Scholar Services office, supporting the international student community with issues related to immigration, personal and cultural adjustment, and university policies and processes. This position contributes to the mission of the Office of Global Engagement and reports to the Associate Director of Immigration & Policy. The advisor will serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). The role involves interpreting and applying federal immigration regulations for international students and scholars, maintaining and updating SEVIS records, and ensuring university compliance with federal immigration laws. Additionally, the advisor will work with faculty and staff across campus to ensure compliance, assist with reporting, and contribute to strategic initiatives within the ISSS office, including orientation, programming, student club advising, and the J Scholar Program.
**Responsibilities:**
1. Act as a DSO and/or ARO for the University of Utah.
2. Update and maintain SEVIS records to ensure compliance with federal immigration laws and assign student/scholar benefits.
3. Advise international students and scholars on immigration, cultural, interpersonal, and educational issues, while guiding them to appropriate resources.
4. Develop and communicate office and university policies and procedures related to international students and scholars.
5. Plan and conduct workshops and seminars on immigration and other related topics for the campus community.
6. Contribute to strategic projects within the ISSS office.
7. Participate in office teams such as the web team, orientation team, assessment team, professional development team, and sponsored student program team.
8. Serve as a liaison for the University of Utah Graduate School, supporting international graduate students.
9. Attend monthly meetings with the Graduate School to support strategic initiatives for international graduate students.
10. Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
**Minimum Qualifications:**
– Bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
– U.S. citizenship or Lawful Permanent Resident status, as required by federal regulations for DSO and ARO roles.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
– Master’s degree in a related field and two years of experience as a DSO, ARO, RO, or PDSO with knowledge of USCIS regulations for F and J visa holders.
– Proficiency in one or more languages in addition to English.
– Experience living or working abroad.
– Familiarity with using SUNAPSIS and PeopleSoft student information systems.
– Ability to interpret and apply complex immigration policies and regulations.
– Strong communication skills, including public speaking, professional writing, and intercultural communication.
– Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage tasks with strict deadlines.
– Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, departments, and offices across campus.
