Central Methodist University is seeking an International Student Advisor to join the office of Global Engagement. The primary responsibility of this role is to ensure the satisfaction and success of students in all programs. The ideal candidate must have a strong understanding of higher education processes, be sensitive to the needs of non-traditional international students, and possess excellent customer service skills.
The International Student Advisor will work closely with the Assistant Dean/Director of Global Engagement and other university personnel to fulfill the following duties:
– Addressing administrative topics such as registration functions, academic standards, and program requirements for students in a timely manner.
– Providing consistent outreach to students, faculty, academic advisors, and other university personnel to ensure student success and retention.
– Offering ideas for the development and improvement of the program based on student feedback.
– Serving as a DSO and ARO to provide expert regulatory advising to international students and scholars.
– Assisting with J1 programs, reviewing student files for compliance, issuing certificates of eligibility, and maintaining records for compliance.
– Assisting students with F-1 and J-1 benefits topics and ensuring regulatory maintenance of their status.
– Researching and interpreting complex federal regulations.
– Exhibiting respectful and ethical behavior with students, colleagues, and administrators.
– Participating in continuing education and training to stay up-to-date with industry best practices.
– Adhering to the policies and conduct required by the Employee Handbook.
– Maintaining and updating student records throughout the enrollment process.
– Completing other assigned duties.
The International Student Advisor will not have any managerial or supervisory responsibilities.
Minimum qualifications for this role include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, two years of higher education experience, and two years of customer service experience. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents to qualify for appointment as a DSO and ARO, and must have a valid driver’s license and a good driving record to operate a vehicle within CMU guidelines.
Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree from an accredited institution, experience working in international operations in higher education, and experience as a DSO and ARO. Knowledge of university systems and processes including admissions, registration, advising, financial aid, billing, international student services, and student affairs is also desired.
The International Student Advisor will be working in a typical office setting and must be able to endure extended sitting and computer use. Occasional lifting, carrying, and moving of up to 25 pounds may be required.
Other necessary skills and abilities include proficiency in using computer software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as strong interpersonal, critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, organization, and time management skills. The ability to work with diverse individuals, programs, departments, and industry professionals while exhibiting diplomacy and cultural sensitivity is essential. Effective verbal and written communication skills, the ability to manage competing priorities, and the ability to follow procedures and instructions are also necessary.
Periodic travel and availability to work some evenings and weekends may be required.
