Job Opportunity: International Student Advisor at The Office of Global Engagement

Position Overview:

The Office of Global Engagement at Western Carolina University (WCU) is seeking a passionate International Student Advisor. This role offers a remarkable chance for both emerging and seasoned professionals who are committed to enriching the experiences of international students during admissions, orientation, campus activities, and by ensuring adherence to immigration regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designated School Official (DSO) Duties: Uphold institutional compliance with federal regulations and maintain records via the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
  • Admissions Liaison: Work alongside the graduate and undergraduate admissions offices to evaluate international applications.
  • Support Services Coordinator: Engage with campus departments to deliver updates and continued support to international students.
  • Orientation Planner: Organize and lead International Student Orientation at the start of each semester.
  • Programming Assistant: Contribute to significant campus events like International Education Week and the International Festival.
  • Student Programming Advisor: Mentor the International Peer Advisor and Liaison (I-PALs) buddy program.
  • Website and Materials Developer: Advance the ISSS section of the WCU Global website and produce materials for international student recruitment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Must have U.S. permanent resident or citizen status to function as a DSO and ARO.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word, with the ability to craft and revise documents and spreadsheets.
  • Experience in managing professional social media accounts, focusing on content creation and engagement metrics.
  • Strong writing skills for clear and concise communication.
  • Experience with diverse cultural groups through previous roles or initiatives.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team, shown through previous team-based roles or projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • 1-2 years of higher education experience.
  • Experience studying or working abroad.
  • Proficiency in a second language.
