Job Overview

Company: The International Student and Scholar Advisor provides guidance to international students and scholars regarding immigration, employment, tax requirements, and other governmental regulations, as well as personal and financial matters. They serve as the Designated School Official for the F-1 visa program and the Alternate Responsible Officer for the J-1 visa program. Additionally, the Advisor supports orientation and other ISSS cross-cultural events and manages the technology necessary for ISSS operations.

Responsibilities include: Reviewing and organizing admissions documents and issuing initial eligibility certificates, such as Forms I-20 and DS-2019, for incoming international students; updating pre-arrival information, assisting admissions offices with inquiries, revising financial forms annually, and managing communication with incoming students. Processing and signing immigration documents for F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars (including extensions of stay, employment authorization applications, status changes, and school transfers); maintaining precise records of advising sessions and supporting the upkeep of non-immigrant student and scholar immigration status records. Manage data to ensure compliance with federal regulations related to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) by running reports from PeopleSoft, ISSM, and the new Sunapsis record-keeping system; handling alerts and supporting testing of SEVIS, ISSM, Sunapsis, and PeopleSoft upgrades and releases. Develop and monitor processes to ensure data accuracy while collaborating with IT, other campus departments, and ISSS staff regarding interfaces with PeopleSoft, ISSM, and Sunapsis. Provide UNC staff, faculty, and community members with information on regulations affecting international students and scholars. Review emergency loan applications and approve in conjunction with the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid. Prepare appeals and special requests for government agencies. Assist in the maintenance of the ISSS website, including creating and updating online forms. Stay informed about government regulations and international events impacting foreign students and scholars and continue to refine cross-cultural advising skills.

Requirements include a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree (or foreign equivalent); candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities related to student support functions may substitute with a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign equivalent) plus at least 1 year of relevant experience.

Candidates must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident as per federal regulations to be designated as an authorized signatory for student and scholar immigration documents and access SEVIS. Comprehensive knowledge of federal regulations regarding international students and scholars, as well as the procedures for nonimmigrant classifications for international students and scholars, including F-1 and J-1 Exchange Visitors, is required. The position requires the ability to learn complex regulations and convey such information to UNC-Chapel Hill departmental staff, faculty, and community members. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with cultural sensitivity, organizational skills, attention to detail, proficiency with data entry, database tools, and technology, and the ability to work in a team environment.
