Job Opportunity: International Student Advisor (Events and Outreach)

The Office of International Affairs at UMKC is seeking an international student advisor specializing in events and outreach. UMKC currently hosts over 1,400 international students from 80 different countries. By joining us, you will contribute to our tradition of academic excellence, diversity, and community.

Responsibilities:
– Lead the planning and execution of new student orientations and check-ins each semester
– Manage an annual calendar of programming that provides valuable information to international students, addressing their concerns and promoting a successful academic career and engaging experience
– Serve as a staff advisor for the International Student Ambassador Program (ISAP), guiding student leaders in planning peer-to-peer events such as International Education Week and Culture Fest
– Develop content for a monthly newsletter that informs international students about upcoming events, deadlines, and other relevant information
– Maintain open and collaborative communication with students, exchange visitors, faculty, staff, and partners in the Kansas City and Missouri communities
– Provide guidance to international students and scholars on immigration, cultural, and personal matters

Work Schedule:
Typically, working hours are Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm with occasional evenings and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications:
– Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
– At least 1 year of relevant experience or the ability to acquire comparable knowledge and skills

Preferred Qualifications:
– Experience in event planning and logistics
– Strong intercultural communication skills, especially with non-native English speakers
– Effective public speaking skills
– Excellent problem-solving abilities
– Experience in international education or living abroad
– Proficiency in a foreign language common to UMKC’s international student population (e.g. Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Vietnamese, French, or Spanish)
– Familiarity with Technolutions Slate or other CRM systems
– Experience working with SEVP and USCIS immigration regulations, particularly as a Designated School Official (DSO) and/or Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO)

Salary:
Anticipated hiring range is $17.96 – $18.92 per hour, commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.
