International Application Advice for the Immigration Advisor Position at VCU

Position Summary:

VCU’s Global Education Office is in search of a passionate Immigration Advisor to enhance our team dedicated to supporting international students’ success. As a Designated School Official (DSO), you’ll play a crucial role in providing legal compliance support to students on F-1 visas, thereby significantly influencing their educational journey at VCU.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with international students empathetically, offering support throughout the entire F-1 visa lifecycle, including I-20 issuance, visa applications, and reporting status changes.
  • Utilize systems such as Sunapsis and Slate for compliance, data management, and customer service.
  • Analyze data effectively to support VCU’s institutional decision-making processes.
  • Assist in planning orientation and intercultural events to enhance international students’ integration.
  • Foster and develop connections within VCU to address students’ needs in insurance, housing, academics, and career guidance.

Essential Qualifications:

  • U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is required by law for a DSO role.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a full-time DSO.
  • Strong understanding of higher education procedures and excellent research and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in problem-solving, time management, and project management.
  • Competency in Microsoft Office Suite and data/document management systems.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Experience in or a commitment to promoting respect and civility in a diverse environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Experience with immigration compliance data management software, like Sunapsis.
  • Experience with J-1 visa processing.
  • Proficiency in a foreign language.
