Why Your Role Matters:
As part of our newly established Global Division, the Head of International Relations plays a critical role in developing engagement, leveraging diplomatic connections, and nurturing relationships with Australian and overseas government entities and international organizations. This position supports the goals outlined in UNSW’s emerging Global Strategy. Working closely with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Global and Pro Vice-Chancellor International, the Head of International Relations positions UNSW as a world-leading university within our global stakeholder community, the diplomatic community in Australia, and across our key international networks.

In collaboration with the wider DVC Global team, this role provides strategic advice on diplomatic matters to the university’s senior levels and manages high-level inward delegations. Additionally, the Head of International Relations develops and implements a comprehensive diplomatic relations strategy and engagement plan for UNSW. The role also contributes strategic global insight and foresight, along with developing transnational partnerships and collaborations with other universities, government agencies, industry partners, and stakeholders to advance UNSW’s international education, business development, and innovation agenda.

Who You Are:
We are seeking an ideal candidate who possesses:

– A Masters’s, PhD, or equivalent qualification in a relevant field and/or extensive experience in diplomatic relations, international affairs, or a related field.
– A proven track record in developing and managing relationships with diplomatic missions, government entities, and international organizations.
– A demonstrated understanding of the strategic drivers for international partnerships, knowledge of international policies, protocols, and diplomatic etiquettes, as well as a strong comprehension of the higher education sector and experience in internationalization efforts.
– Proficiency/fluency in other languages (desirable).
– Experience proactively engaging with diplomats, ambassadors, and other stakeholders to build strong relationships and partnerships for UNSW.
– Demonstrable experience organizing and hosting diplomatic events, receptions, and visits to promote the university and showcase its academic and research excellence.
– Experience working collaboratively with senior leaders to identify opportunities for collaboration and joint initiatives with diplomatic missions and international organizations.
– Experience liaising with government agencies and relevant entities to navigate regulatory processes and foster international partnerships for research, education, and innovation.
– The ability to identify and pursue opportunities for joint research projects, exchange programs, and academic partnerships with universities and research institutions worldwide.
– Support for international delegations visiting the university, including arranging meetings and facilitating productive interactions with university leadership, faculties, staff, and students.
– A solid understanding of international trends, political landscapes, and policy changes that may impact the university’s diplomatic and international relations strategy. Additionally, overseeing high-quality reporting and analytics on diplomatic and international policy issues.
– The ability to prepare and present Council papers, management briefs, and high-level correspondence to key stakeholders regarding diplomatic affairs.
