Graduate School of International Studies

The Graduate School of International Studies at Université Laval in Quebec City, Canada, invites applications for a faculty position specializing in science diplomacy. The appointee will serve as co-chair of the Université Laval – Sorbonne Université – Fonds de recherche du Québec Research Chair in Science Diplomacy. Sorbonne Université will select a co-chair with complementary expertise and research direction following this recruitment.

Science diplomacy encompasses broad research areas, with our primary interests spanning two key dimensions: science in diplomacy and science for diplomacy. We welcome applications addressing one or both dimensions. The first dimension focuses on leveraging scientific expertise in evidence-based policymaking to tackle critical global issues such as climate change, generative AI, global health, and democratic erosion. This involves: pinpointing pertinent scientific sources for policy guidance; mapping knowledge transfer between researchers, policymakers, and international bodies; identifying key players in science-policy exchanges; evaluating communication and collaboration between scientific and political entities; and scrutinizing case studies to assess successful and failed policy influences.

The second dimension, science for diplomacy, considers scientific collaboration as a strategic means to promote international cooperation and build trust among nations. In politically sensitive scenarios, science can facilitate dialogue by providing a neutral ground for collaboration among researchers from rival or conflicted states. The focus is on exploring transnational scientific partnerships and evaluating their political implications. Can these collaborations mitigate international tensions or create alternative communication avenues between governments? A multidisciplinary approach is advocated to enrich understanding of both dimensions of science diplomacy.

A research advisor will assist the co-chairs in developing, planning, and submitting research grant applications and ensuring effective outreach for the Chair. A budget for doctoral scholarships related to the Chair will be allocated.

The successful candidate will commence as a regular professor within the Graduate School on September 1, 2025, or by January 1, 2026, at the latest.
