Earlham College, located in Richmond, Indiana, is currently accepting applications for the position of Director of Japan Programs. This role involves overseeing Earlham’s study abroad programs in Japan, as well as other responsibilities related to program development and outreach. The desired start date for this full-time Administrative Faculty position is mid-summer 2024.
The majority of the work for this position will be conducted in-person at the Earlham College campus, with the possibility of occasional remote work. The role also includes both international and domestic travel and is eligible for work authorization sponsorship.
The primary duties of the Director of Japan Programs include program management, overseeing the Earlham College/Waseda University dual degree program, managing additional programs in or related to Japan, staff and personnel management and development, fundraising and program advancement, and other related tasks. To be considered for this position, applicants must have a Master’s degree in a discipline related to Japan, Japanese studies, and/or international education. They should also have at least three years of experience in educational program administration, preferably in international education or a closely related field. Proficiency in both Japanese and English, as well as a basic cultural fluency in communication with Japanese higher educational institutions, is highly desirable. Other qualifications include the ability to administer and develop study abroad programs, advocate effectively for program interests, demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, and possess experience in budget management and accounting. Strong oral, written, and electronic communication skills, as well as the ability to work collaboratively and cooperatively, are also necessary.
Desired qualifications for this position include a terminal degree (Ph.D., etc.) in a relevant field, five or more years of directly relevant experience, native-level fluency in both Japanese and English, and a high level of cultural fluency in communication with Japanese institutions and colleagues. Additional desirable qualifications include specific training related to cooperation with Japanese counterparts, experience in Japan or a Japanese-language program, and skills or background in visual communication, marketing, and/or graphic design.
