The Office of International Education at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking applications for the position of Director of International Student and Scholar Services. We are specifically interested in candidates with prior experience in the field, who can bring diverse perspectives and contribute to the academic community’s excellence.

The Director of International Student and Scholar Services will be responsible for overseeing the administrative functions related to F and J student and scholar services. This role will focus on policy development, case management, and service delivery. The Director will work closely with the Executive Director of the Office of International Education, supervise staff, and ensure compliance with complex government regulations. They will also serve as the Responsible Officer (RO) for the Exchange Visitor Program and may assist with study abroad emergency response. Cross-cultural sensitivity and leadership in international education are essential.

Key responsibilities include setting policies, reviewing office practices, facilitating communication and education, conducting outreach, and managing cases. The Director will prioritize delivering outstanding services in a post-COVID context while maintaining efficiency and a student/scholar-centric approach. They will provide strategic and operational guidance, serve as the primary contact for international student and scholar immigration services, and supervise managers and team leads responsible for advising foreign students and scholars, immigration compliance, reporting, and document production. The Director will also lead F and J services, adapt to regulatory changes, and ensure excellent service provision. In the absence of the OIE Executive Director and Director of Study Abroad, the Director will manage study abroad emergency response.

The ideal candidate will possess cross-cultural sensitivity, effective communication skills, strong leadership abilities, adaptability, and a deep understanding of F and J non-immigrant regulations and the SEVIS system. They should be able to collaborate with staff across campus, initiate and lead projects, and pay close attention to detail and deadlines.

Qualifications for this role include knowledge of F and J immigration regulations, a minimum of five years of experience in student/scholar immigration issues and higher education administration, with at least three years at a high or very high research institution, as well as strong analytical, oral, and written communication skills. A Master’s Degree or equivalent training and experience are also required, and experience living, studying, or working abroad is preferred.
