The Hiring Department at the Office of International Affairs is currently seeking a Director of International Affairs who will serve as the University’s Senior Internationalization Officer (SIO). This individual will lead the Office of International Student Affairs (ISAO) and Study Abroad and Global Engagement (SAGE) departments.

The Director of International Affairs will be responsible for developing a strong global agenda and utilizing technology and data to enhance international student recruitment and retention. They will also be tasked with strengthening global partnerships for study abroad programs and global engagements. The Director must have a solid understanding of immigration laws and ensure compliance throughout the university community.

Additionally, the Director will mentor and develop direct reports, cultivate a supportive work environment, and contribute to the overall success of the ISAO and SAGE teams.

Key responsibilities of this role include:

1. Develop a comprehensive and sustainable vision for internationalization and globalization, incorporating technology and data-driven insights.
2. Implement an omni-channel approach to enhance international student recruitment and retention, maximizing outcomes through the use of technology and data.
3. Stay updated on immigration laws and provide guidance to ensure compliance with student, faculty, and staff visas.
4. Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and professional growth among direct reports.
5. Align the Office of International Student Affairs with university-wide functions, collaborating with academic departments and support units.
6. Develop effective policies and procedures to support international students throughout their academic journey.
7. Strengthen strategic partnerships to expand UMKC’s global network and enhance international collaborations.
8. Collaborate with the Vice Chancellor for Research to support international research initiatives.
9. Work with the UMKC Foundation President and deans to secure development resources for international activities.
10. Collaborate with university leaders to build resources that support internationalization efforts.
11. Pursue best practices and innovation in global engagement within a higher education context.
12. Provide guidance on cultural visits and ensure a welcoming environment for visitors from diverse cultures.

The minimum qualifications for this position include a master’s degree or equivalent, along with at least 7 years of relevant experience. Preferred qualifications include leadership experience in an office of international affairs or equivalent, knowledge of immigration laws and procedures, strong communication skills, and the ability to foster partnerships and collaborations.
