University of Oregon

The Division of Global Engagement (DGE) at the University of Oregon is responsible for making the university more globally focused. The DGE oversees various international engagements, global projects, and transnational partnerships throughout the university. The DGE consists of several units, including International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), Global Education Oregon (GEO), and the Global Studies Institute (GSI).

ISSS is a vital component of the DGE, providing advising services and programs to the international population at the University of Oregon. it is divided into two subunits: International Student Services and International Scholar Services.

International Student Services assists international students with visa and immigration matters, academic support, and cultural adjustment. They offer pre-arrival programming, comprehensive orientations, academic services, and a peer mentor program. Additionally, ISSS administers over $1 million in scholarships for international students.

International Scholar Services provides immigration advising and document services to international faculty, visiting scholars, and researchers. They are responsible for overseeing all areas of employment-based immigration at the university.

The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is another important department that handles the legal affairs of the university. OGC attorneys specialize in various areas of law and represent the university in litigation, administrative proceedings, and business transactions.

The Director of International Scholar Services plays a crucial role within the DGE. They report to the Dean and Vice Provost for International Affairs and the Associate General Counsel. The primary responsibilities of this position include overseeing the timely submission of visa applications for international employees and visitors, navigating complex regulatory regimes, establishing university policies and procedures related to employment-based immigration, and providing case-by-case recommendations to hiring authorities. The Director of International Scholar Services also manages the operational functions of ISSS and provides support and backup to International Student and Scholar Advisors.

Applicants for this position must have an appropriate graduate-level degree (such as a relevant master’s or JD) and six years of experience in immigration, higher education compliance, or related federal regulatory regimes. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of education and professional experience is acceptable. Three years of supervisory experience is also required.

Preferred qualifications for the position include a law degree or advanced degree in human resources or immigration, knowledge of federal regulations pertaining to immigration and hiring processes, experience in developing employment processes and ensuring compliance, and a commitment to promoting inclusivity within the university and local communities.
