Animal and Plant Health Agency

The International Development Scientist will assist Senior Scientists, the Project Manager/s, and the Lead Scientist in delivering International Development projects in-country. The role also entails identifying and pursuing new international opportunities, as well as analyzing information to achieve desired outcomes within APHA.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team comprising collaborators in the UK and other countries, delivering laboratory, online, and workshop-based activities in lower-middle income countries. Plans may change at short notice, necessitating flexibility. Duties may include delivering life sciences (such as virology), data analysis, preparing project reports and manuscripts, and engaging with overseas colleagues from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds. The post also requires collaboration with colleagues from other Government departments and agencies. Short-notice project assignments are possible. The position is based in the International Development team, with assignments also possible in Virology and other departments.

The job holder must have a strong understanding of laboratory-based diagnostics and be able to bring scientific and project management skills together proactively. The ideal candidate will have a strong laboratory-based background, good communication skills, and the ability to engage effectively with international stakeholders.

Proficiency in laboratory work and diagnostic principles is essential, and the job holder must be willing to travel overseas (including to lower-middle income countries).

The role may require domestic or overseas travel to visit customers, collaborators, funders, academic institutions, and government laboratories, and to attend events such as congresses and symposia, as well as visits to farms or abattoirs as part of ongoing research.
