The Ashmolean Museum is seeking a dedicated full-time Collections Assistant to join the Department of Eastern Art. This position plays a critical role in supporting cross-collection, object-based teaching and other forms of academic engagement at the University. During term time, your main duties will involve preparing, moving, and managing objects, alongside executing tasks related to teaching and research.
Under the guidance of the Collections Manager for the Department of Eastern Art, you will also handle the preparation and movement of objects for various viewings and research activities, outgoing loans, photography, and conservation work. Additionally, you will be responsible for supervising visitors in the study rooms.
You will support Collections Managers in enhancing storage areas, executing gallery projects, and performing maintenance tasks. There may also be occasions where you will travel nationally and internationally to ensure the safe transport of loaned objects for external exhibitions.
This role requires you to work independently, manage your workload effectively, and prioritize tasks. Key requirements include a strong attention to detail, a good understanding of various materials (e.g., ceramics, stones, metals, organics), and experience in handling objects.
This full-time, permanent position requires onsite work for 36.5 hours per week. The role involves physically demanding tasks, including lifting and moving heavy boxes, for which manual handling training will be provided.
