Associate Director, International Student Services Canada

About the Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Global Services – Canada, the Associate Director provides guidance and supervision to comprehensive advising team, and oversight of processes and procedures related to the delivery of international student and scholar services at Northeastern University Canadian campuses.

The Associate Director provides support for all Immigration (IRCC, CSBA) compliance requirements as well as working with the advising and compliance teams to ensure that the campus is meeting all requirements to maintain status as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). They will serve as a subject matter expert (SME) key areas of service for international students, including immigration.

The Associate Director: Manages comprehensive range of international student and scholar advising functions and makes referrals to relevant campus support as required; Ensures the delivery of holistic advising, support, and services aimed at contributing to the integration, retention, and overall achievements of international students and scholars, actively assists in resolving complex issues; Collaborates with OGS managers and campus stakeholders to develop, design, and implement programs and infrastructures needed to support and enrich the international student and scholar experience; Contributes to the planning and implementation of international student orientation; Serves as a Point of Contact (POC) for any inquiries related to international student immigration and compliance issues; Performs other duties as assigned.

The Associate Director supervises an advising team, providing direction, training, and workflow management, connecting the team seamlessly to other OGS teams and/or locations in the Global Campus network, as needed; plan, monitor and report for budget allocations for expenditures related to the delivery of international students services, programming, and work in conjuction with the Director OGS Canada to plan and allocate for staff professional development. The Associate Director will also serve as a leader at Northeastern University Vancouver to address the specific needs of international students and OGS collaborations, in alignment with the vison of the Global Network in Canada by OGS Canada Director and Senior Director of the Office of Global Services.

Job Duties

International Student Services:

  • Participate in and supervise student and scholar immigration advising including all aspects of compliance with relevant regulations through their lifecycle at Northeastern.
  • Resolve issues regarding maintenance of immigration status and retaining eligibility for post graduation work options. Lead or participate in the resolution of complex immigration cases.
  • Monitor international students’ enrollment status and compliance with federal regulations and institutional policies.
  • Maintain knowledge and operational expertise IRCC and CBSA functions and requirements. Research and understand IRPA and IRPR, program updates, public policy announcements and processing instructions as they apply to international student/scholar services.
  • Provide excellent customer service. Participate in advising hours and respond to email inquiries in a timely manner.

Admissions and International Student Orientation:

  • Respond to inquiries regarding permit and visa processes, document issuance, international orientation, and the resources, policies, and procedures of Northeastern University.
  • Ensure website and orientation materials are up to date and delivered to students in timely manner.

Leadership:

  • Supervise a team of OGS staff, providing comprehensive training and opportunities for professional development.
  • Serve as an OGS representative to campus stakeholders.
  • Develop and lead training for campus partners on relevant topics related to international students and scholars.
  • Collaborate with OGS managers, advisors and staff to develop, design, and implement programs and infrastructures needed to support and enrich the international student and scholar experience at Northeastern.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Master’s degree in international education or a related field, or relevant experience and education equivalent.
  • Three to five years of formal experience in international student services as lead on IRCC/CBSA issues, at post-secondary level at a Canadian institution, preferably with experience as an RCIC or RISIA
  • High level of organizational skills, attention to detail, analytical capabilities, and a positive approach to problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated team leadership and personnel management with experience supervising professional staff.
  • Exceptional intercultural, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility, creativity, and good humour.

Desired:

  • A proven ability to work effectively with students and stakeholders.
  • Systematic and outcomes based approach to student service delivery, including knowledge of best practices in advising and student development
  • Fluency in multiple languages.
  • Experience living or working abroad.
  • Strong computer skills in Sunapsis, Banner, Salesforce, Canvas, Slate, etc.
  • Member in good standing of College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants
