The University of Illinois Chicago’s Office of International Services is currently looking to hire an Assistant Director of International Services. This role involves overseeing the international services division with minimal supervision, offering guidance to international staff and faculty, and providing internal consulting to academic management.

**Key Responsibilities:**

*Operations and Administration*
– Guide, mentor, and train the advising staff for international services on their tasks, goals, problem-solving, and both individual and team development.
– Manage and supervise immigration support services related to employment for the university’s international employees.
– Assess program and policy effectiveness, proposing new strategies or procedures to ensure regulatory compliance, adapt to emerging trends, and enhance departmental operations.
– Coordinate with external entities such as the Department of Homeland Security, Social Security Administration, Department of Labor, Department of Motor Vehicles, and Department of State to address issues or exchange information.
– Ensure the university’s adherence to employment-based immigration laws.
– Responsible for examining, preparing, and interpreting immigration documents, letters, and regulations for hiring international faculty and staff. Prepare filings for H-1B, E-3, TN, O-1, and employment-based permanent residency petitions.

*Internal Consulting*
– Provide guidance and support to academic department management, staff, and faculty on immigration rules, procedures, and recommended actions.
– Advise international staff and faculty on regulatory and administrative issues related to their immigration status, including visa procedures, maintaining legal status, employment conditions, extensions of stay, status changes, and cultural and financial needs, as well as travel regulations.

*Activities and Programs*
– Manage the creation of orientation programs, immigration seminars, workshops, and social events.

*Training & Staff Management*
– Plan, delegate, and evaluate staff assignments to ensure group objectives are achieved. Responsible for hiring, training, developing, and managing staff to maintain a competent team.

Perform other related duties and engage in special projects as necessary.

**Minimum Qualifications:**
– Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences, humanities, or a related discipline.
– At least five years of relevant experience is required.
– Strong understanding of immigration laws, regulations, and processes.
– Ability to meet USDHS requirements as a Designated School Official for F-1 programs and the U.S. Department of State’s J-1 Visitor Program as an Alternate Responsible Officer.
– Familiarity with the Department of Homeland Security’s SEVIS system and the Department of Labor’s FLAG system.
– Effective leadership, management capabilities, and strong communication skills across diverse cultural backgrounds.

**Preferred Qualifications:**
– Master’s degree in higher education, international studies, or a related field.
– Practical knowledge of H-1B, TN, LPR, O-1, and J-1 processes.
– Strong analytical abilities to understand and synthesize various regulations and solve complex immigration issues.
