Fordham University in London is hiring an adjunct professor for a level three course in International Communication (COM 3380). The course will run during the fall semester, starting on September 4, 2023, and concluding on December 15, with a study break from October 23-27.
This course provides an introduction to international communication and consists of two main blocks. The first block offers an overview of global media systems and discusses media representation. The second block explores media systems in different countries, focusing on news media in the UK, China, and the Arab World, as well as entertainment industries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. It also examines media systems in the era of globalization and digital media.
Course Objectives:
- Reflect on media representation of crucial issues in international communication.
- Critically examine the relationships between political economic factors, media production, and global media industries.
- Introduce and discuss different media systems worldwide.
The successful candidate must be an experienced and effective teacher who can cater to a diverse student body and engage students in the subject matter. The course will be taught in weekly three-hour blocks, specifically on Wednesday evenings (18:00-21:00) in Fall 2023. Approximately 600 students study at Fordham London each year from Fordham University’s School of Arts & Science and the Gabelli School of Business.
Main Duties:
- Teach International Communication.
- Prepare teaching materials for the course.
- Provide an updated syllabus and course pack/reader details by the deadline.
- Provide academic advising.
- Arrange/accompany students on co-curricular trips and invite guest speakers as appropriate.
- Set and administer examinations and other assessments.
- Attend academic staff meetings.
Required Qualifications:
- Masters degree or equivalent professional experience in a related field.
- Relevant teaching experience in higher education and proven teaching effectiveness.
- Excellent communication skills and responsiveness to students and administration.
Desirable Qualifications:
- PhD in a relevant field (or nearing completion).
- Previous experience teaching within US higher education.
- Research experience, publications, and interests in the subject area.
