OVERVIEW The Director, Study Abroad plays a central leadership role in overseeing study abroad programs at The Institute for American Universities, working closely with the ACM-IAU Leadership Team and partner institutions. Based on-site in San Diego, California, this position provides strategic and operational oversight of study abroad activities while ensuring a high-quality experience for students and institutional partners. The role reports to the Dean of Academic & Strategic Initiatives and contributes to both day-to-day management and broader international education initiatives. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Oversee study abroad programs in collaboration with the ACM-IAU Leadership Team – Serve as a liaison with partner institutions – Supervise the Study Abroad unit – Support on-site staff and advisors – Assist with visa processes and pre-departure preparation – Oversee program promotion activities and application deadlines – Advise students on study abroad programs – Manage escalations related to study abroad operations and student issues – Participate in international committees REQUIREMENTS – Strong knowledge of U.S. higher education systems – Strong knowledge of international higher education systems – Knowledge of study abroad admissions practices – Knowledge of study abroad marketing practices – Understanding of current issues in international education WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS The Director, Study Abroad helps shape how students engage with global learning opportunities by ensuring programs are well-managed, accessible, and aligned with institutional goals. Through collaboration with partners and leadership teams, this role supports the academic, personal, and intercultural development of students.
