About the office The Student Experience portfolio includes Student Success, Indigenous Education, Chaplaincy, Libraries, Student Life and Wellbeing. About the role The Student Counsellor is required to work flexibly and cooperatively within a diverse and skilled team of specialists and other colleagues in the Student Experience portfolio. This position contributes to the provision of a professional counselling service to the University student community to facilitate the personal, emotional, social and educational transition and adjustment of students. The position reports to the Team Leader, Student Counselling located on the Fremantle campus. Key Responsibilities Provide a confidential and ethical counselling service to University students and where appropriate refer students to external agencies to support long-term counselling objectives. Provide assessment, case-management, counselling and referral of students including students in high risk situations and with complex mental health concerns. Actively participate in peer and group supervision, case reviews, and quality assurance processes, including maintaining accurate student records and contributing to client outcome evaluation. Deliver crisis intervention support and strategies with students and provide referrals (including secondary) to those affected by incidents involving students. Deliver workshops and facilitate individual and group interventions using approaches such as CBT, ACT, mindfulness, client-centred, and short-term solution-focused counselling. Collaborate with university departments to provide specialist input into student mental wellbeing, safety, pastoral care, mediation, and learning support initiatives. Qualifications, skills & experience Relevant Tertiary Qualifications in psychology or counselling and relevant experience with an understanding of the higher education sector and student challenges. Hold registration with a relevant professional body such as AHPRA and/or Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and/or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA). Significant experience in delivering workshops both with individuals and groups. Ability to provide a range of counselling services tailored to student needs that is evidence-based. Demonstrated experience in outcome informed counselling approaches, including strong assessment, intervention and referral skills. Experienced in working with high-risk students and in assessment and treatment of complex mental health issues. Experience addressing the needs of diverse student groups, including equity and international students, with strong cultural awareness and inclusivity.
