OVERVIEW The Student Counsellor role at Charles Sturt University Melbourne supports student wellbeing through evidence-based counselling, crisis intervention, and wellbeing initiatives. Working within the Charles Sturt University Counselling and Wellbeing Service, the position focuses on supporting diverse student populations across face-to-face, telephone, and online environments. The role also contributes to student safety, critical incident management, and the development of scalable wellbeing programs within a collaborative higher education setting. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Provide evidence-based individual counselling to students across all study modes through face-to-face, telephone, and online delivery. – Deliver crisis intervention support appropriate to the need and context. – Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of health and wellbeing programs and resources. – Consult, liaise, and collaborate with university colleagues on student wellbeing matters. – Maintain professional development and professional accreditation requirements. – Maintain professional case notes and files in accordance with industry standards and professional body guidelines. – Maintain knowledge of higher education sector issues, student safety and wellbeing, legislation, policies, procedures, and relevant systems and technologies. – Contribute to Counselling and Wellbeing Service initiatives, meetings, programs, presentations, reports, and collegial support activities. – Work closely with diverse student populations while recognising cultural and individual differences. – Collaborate with the Critical Incident Management Team to manage student-related critical incidents. – Assist in developing and implementing initiatives that enhance overall student wellbeing. REQUIREMENTS – Degree in Social Work or Psychology with eligibility for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), or a counselling qualification supported by relevant professional experience, or AHPRA registration with substantial relevant experience. – Extensive experience providing mental health and disability support within an organisational setting. – Demonstrated advocacy and case management skills. – Demonstrated ability to design, deliver, and evaluate programs, workshops, and training seminars. – Awareness of issues affecting international and domestic students, including cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, and sexual preference considerations. – Demonstrated skill in negotiating and resolving sensitive and complex issues. – Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to embrace change. – Ability to use communications, record-keeping, and administrative technology effectively. – Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. – Ability to work collaboratively within a diverse and inclusive environment.
