OVERVIEW James Cook University (JCU) is seeking an Indigenous Academic Support Advisor to join the Indigenous Education and Research Centre in Cairns, Queensland. This full-time continuing role focuses on supporting Indigenous students as they transition into higher education and develop the academic capabilities needed for successful university learning. The position works closely with academic staff, Student Support Advisors, and tutors to provide coordinated support, early intervention, and targeted education strategies. This is an identified position for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Work with Student Support Advisors to address academic and personal factors affecting student learning – Support students to understand course structures, assessment expectations, and progression requirements – Develop students’ academic skills, self-management, and independent learning strategies – Deliver targeted workshops for students – Develop and manage Individual Student Learning Plans (ISLPs) – Coordinate early academic intervention and monitor student engagement – Allocate tutors to support Indigenous students – Recruit, assess, and onboard tutors to support student readiness – Collaborate with tutors and academic staff to deliver timely learning support REQUIREMENTS – Experience supporting students to build academic skills and become independent learners – Ability to assess learning needs and identify appropriate support pathways – Experience coordinating tutoring, peer learning, or academic support programs – Strong organisational skills and ability to manage proactive case management – Experience working with diverse cohorts, including first-in-family and Indigenous students – Ability to contribute to positive student learning outcomes – Identified position for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS This role contributes to Indigenous education by helping students strengthen academic confidence, learning strategies, and long-term success in higher education.
