OVERVIEW The Community Engagement Officer – Dubbo Region role at the University of Newcastle focuses on strengthening pathways into higher education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across the Central West of NSW. This identified position plays a key role in community-based outreach, relationship building, and the delivery of programs that support access, aspiration, and informed decision-making about university study. The role is full-time, fixed term for 12 months, and based in Dubbo with regular regional travel. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Deliver school-based and community-based outreach activities, presentations, and programs that promote higher education pathways and opportunities – Coordinate and support the planning and delivery of the Schools to University (S2U) Program – Liaise with schools, Aboriginal communities, community contacts, and internal university teams – Build and maintain respectful, culturally safe relationships with Aboriginal communities, students, families, and regional stakeholders – Represent the University at events, workshops, and community engagement activities across the Central West region – Undertake regular travel to rural and remote areas as part of regional engagement REQUIREMENTS – Applicants must be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, as Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification authorised under Section 14 of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 – Ability to demonstrate Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage through Confirmation of Aboriginality in line with University procedure – Strong cultural and community connection and experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities – High-level written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully across diverse cultural and community groups – Proven organisational skills, including the ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and coordinate activities effectively – Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, families, or community groups – Existing connections or strong cultural relationships with Aboriginal communities in the Central West region – Ability and willingness to undertake regular travel across the Central West WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS Community engagement roles such as this are critical to improving equity and access in higher education, particularly for students in regional, rural, and remote communities.
