The ACU is seeking an inspiring and experienced leader to serve as Secretary General and CEO, guiding our organization through its next phase of growth and development. As a global network, the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) is dedicated to fostering international collaboration in higher education to build a better world. Since our establishment in 1913, we have connected and convened institutions, individuals, and partners to create educational opportunities, enhance universities’ capabilities, and advance the role of higher education in sustainable development. Our objective is to build a strong and interconnected higher education community that transcends borders and works towards a fairer and more sustainable world.
With over 450 member universities in 50 countries across the Commonwealth, we are one of the largest and most diverse international university networks. Two-thirds of our members are located in low- and middle-income countries, and 5% are in small island states. We believe that connecting universities across borders is essential for building healthier, greener, and fairer societies, and that higher education is vital in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As we approach the 2030 target date for achieving the 17 globally-agreed SDGs, the ACU is seeking an inspiring and experienced leader to serve as Secretary General and CEO, leading the organization into its next phase of development. Reporting to the Council, the Secretary General and CEO will be responsible for advancing the ACU’s strategic vision, collaborating with our membership across the Commonwealth, senior government officials, NGOs, and other partners. The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to shape the ACU’s role in the modern Commonwealth, addressing global challenges while upholding our historical legacy and values. They will focus on promoting membership value, both for existing and new members, while also ensuring financial sustainability and developing revenue streams. Additionally, the Secretary General and CEO will provide strong internal leadership to our complex organization, working closely with our Executive Team, and act as an influential external ambassador.
The ideal candidate will possess extensive senior leadership experience in a complex environment, along with a deep understanding of international higher education and the Commonwealth. They will recognize the economic and social importance of higher education globally. Strong ambassadorial skills and experience in strengthening international networks within diverse geopolitical contexts are highly desirable. The successful candidate will have the gravitas and credibility to influence both within and outside the organization. A proven track record of inspiring and empowering teams, as well as navigating organizational complexity, is critical.
