– Exceptional pension scheme
– Excellent work-life balance

**Contract Type:**
– 3-year fixed term (with potential to become open-ended)

**Location:**
– Science and Technology Facilities Council, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Harwell, Oxfordshire

**About PPD:**
The Particle Physics Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of the largest Particle Physics groups in the UK. Our mission is to investigate fundamental particles and the forces acting between them. We design, construct, operate, and utilize some of the world’s most sensitive scientific instruments, in collaboration with academia, industry, and international labs including CERN. We are engaged in projects such as ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, DUNE, Hyper-K, Super-K, T2K, and more.

**About the Role:**
A position has become available to work on the upgrade of the ATLAS experiment at CERN, specifically for the High-Luminosity LHC era. This role focuses on developing and deploying the new Level-0 Global Trigger and upgrading the Level-0 Calorimeter trigger to handle increased collision rates and intensity. The RAL PPD group oversees the design and manufacture of Level-0 Global Trigger components and the maintenance/upgrading of the electron feature extractor (eFEX) for High Luminosity LHC. You will collaborate with colleagues from UK universities and other international teams to commission and operate systems within ATLAS at CERN.

**About You:**

**Responsibilities:**
– Develop and integrate the L0 Global Trigger as a large-scale system.
– Re-commission the eFEX ahead of High-Luminosity LHC data collection.
– Provide design recommendations for optimal system performance and stability.
– Collaborate closely with the ATLAS L1Calo Group, RAL Technology Department, and global ATLAS members.

**Essential Criteria:**
– Ph.D. in Physics or related field/equivalent experience.
– Relevant post-graduate experience.
– Proficiency in C and Python.
– Ability to work in international teams.
– Excellent communication skills (oral and written).
– Problem-solving skills.
– Ability to meet deadlines.
– Experience with large-scale systems and real-time software (Linux/Unix).
– Experience with programmable hardware for real-time systems.

**Special Requirements:**
– Willingness to travel within the UK and internationally.
– Ability to work in ATLAS’ controlled radiation environment.
– Capability to handle electronics at various heights within racks.

**How to Apply:**
Submit your CV and a covering letter outlining how you meet the specified criteria and your motivation for the role. Please include the job reference number in the filename description of each uploaded document. Failure to submit a covering letter may result in your application not being considered.

**Contact:** For informal discussions, reach out to Dr. Robin Middleton at robin.middleton@stfc.ac.uk.

**Our Offer:**
– 30 days holiday plus 10.5 bank and privilege days.
– Defined benefit pension scheme.
– Employee discounts on shopping/travel.
– Excellent learning and development opportunities.

**Equal Opportunities:**
The STFC is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We encourage applications from under-represented groups and ensure fair treatment for all applicants. More details on equal opportunities and support for disabled applicants are provided.

**About STFC and UKRI:**
