OVERVIEW The Assistant Director, Office of International Students and Scholars at the University of North Carolina Wilmington plays a central role in advising and supporting F-1 degree-seeking international students. This position combines immigration compliance, student advising, and cross-campus collaboration to ensure students maintain lawful status while succeeding academically and personally. The role requires strong regulatory knowledge, effective communication, and a student-centered approach within a public university setting in the United States. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Serve as the international student adviser for UNCW F-1 degree-seeking international students – Support students with visa sponsorship, I-20 applications, visa procedures, immigration advising, and personal matters – Manage Terra Dotta and related systems, including Banner, Slate, and Excel – Complete SEVIS updates in compliance with federal regulations – Run workshops on Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and maintaining legal status – Liaise with faculty and staff across the university – Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) in SEVIS – Assist with international student orientations and events REQUIREMENTS – Master’s degree – U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residence as required by federal regulations – At least two years of experience in student advising, immigration advising, program coordination, and/or international admissions – Strong communication skills – International knowledge and sensitivity – Effective time management skills – Availability for occasional nights, weekends, and domestic and international travel WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS International students rely on accurate advising and timely support to maintain legal status and fully participate in university life. This role helps ensure institutional compliance with federal immigration regulations while also providing guidance that directly impacts student retention, well-being, and academic progress. By serving as a bridge between students, faculty, and administrative systems, the Assistant Director contributes to a welcoming and well-managed international campus environment. BONUS: APPLICATION ADVICE – Highlight direct experience with F-1 regulations, SEVIS reporting, and student immigration advising, using clear examples from your previous roles – Emphasize familiarity with student information systems or databases, especially if you have worked with Terra Dotta, Banner, Slate, or similar platforms – Demonstrate strong communication skills by describing how you have led workshops, orientations, or one-on-one advising sessions – Address your ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines, particularly during peak periods such as registration, orientation, or OPT processing cycles – Convey cultural sensitivity and international awareness by referencing work with diverse student populations or cross-cultural settings – Acknowledge flexibility for occasional evenings, weekends, and travel, and frame this as part of your commitment to student support and program success
