OVERVIEW The Study Abroad Advisor role within an International Center supports students as they engage in academic experiences outside the United States. Based at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, this position focuses on advising, program coordination, and student support across multiple phases of the study abroad lifecycle. The role combines direct student advising with programmatic and community-oriented responsibilities within the international education office. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Advise students on study abroad opportunities, including Cal Poly Global programs and partner programs – Support pre-departure orientations and program-specific orientations for students preparing to study abroad – Assist students throughout the application process for study abroad programs – Guide and support students during pre-departure and re-entry phases of their study abroad experience – Mentor peer advisors involved in study abroad advising and outreach – Support International Center events related to study abroad and global engagement REQUIREMENTS WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS Study abroad advisors play a central role in helping students access and successfully navigate international learning opportunities. By providing structured guidance before, during, and after study abroad, this role helps students manage academic planning, personal transitions, and re-entry reflection. The position also supports institutional goals related to global learning, student success, and international engagement. BONUS: APPLICATION ADVICE – Emphasize any experience advising students, particularly in academic, international, or intercultural settings, and clearly explain your role and impact – Highlight familiarity with study abroad processes such as applications, orientations, or student programming, even if gained through related roles – Demonstrate strong communication skills by providing clear examples of how you have supported students through complex or multi-step processes – If you have worked with peer mentors, student leaders, or ambassadors, describe how you supported or guided their development – Show an understanding of the student lifecycle by referencing experiences that involve transitions, preparation, or reflection phases – Research the institution and its international programs so you can articulate how your interests align with the mission of the International Center
