OVERVIEW The International Scholar Advisor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill plays a central role in supporting the university’s global academic community. Located within International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) in the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs, this position focuses on advising, compliance, and institutional coordination related to international faculty and researchers. The role directly supports the recruitment, onboarding, and long-term success of international scholars across the university. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Advise international faculty and scholars on U.S. immigration status and related regulatory requirements – Serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer (J-1) and Designated School Official (F-1) – Prepare immigrant and nonimmigrant immigration petitions – Ensure institutional compliance with U.S. immigration laws and federal regulations – Liaise with federal agencies regarding immigration matters – Collaborate with internal university units on scholar-related processes – Provide trainings related to immigration and scholar support – Support the recruitment and retention of global faculty and researchers – Deliver advising, administrative services, and programming for international scholars REQUIREMENTS WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS International faculty and scholars contribute significantly to teaching, research, and global engagement at major research universities. This role helps ensure that these scholars can work and live in the United States in compliance with complex immigration regulations, reducing institutional risk while enhancing the scholar experience. By supporting recruitment and retention, the International Scholar Advisor strengthens the university’s global academic mission and research competitiveness. BONUS: APPLICATION ADVICE – Emphasize direct experience with immigration advising, regulatory compliance, or work with international populations in higher education or related settings – Clearly demonstrate familiarity with J-1 and F-1 regulations, even if gained through closely related roles or supervised responsibilities – Highlight examples of collaboration with multiple stakeholders, such as government agencies or internal university partners – Show attention to detail and comfort working with complex policies, documentation, and timelines – Communicate a service-oriented approach, particularly your ability to support faculty, researchers, and scholars with professionalism and cultural sensitivity – Tailor your application to reflect interest in internationalization, global mobility, and the mission of a large public research university
