OVERVIEW The International Scholar Advising Specialist role focuses on providing essential advising support to international faculty, staff, and scholars at a major U.S. research university. Based at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, this position works closely with both international populations and their host or employing departments on immigration- and visa-related matters. The role also contributes to broader institutional initiatives that support the university’s international academic community. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Provide advising support to international faculty, staff, and scholars on matters related to immigration and visa regulations – Advise host and employing departments on immigration- and visa-related issues affecting international faculty, staff, and scholars – Contribute to initiatives that support the University’s international faculty, staff, and scholars REQUIREMENTS WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS International faculty, staff, and scholars play a critical role in advancing teaching, research, and global engagement at U.S. universities. This role helps ensure that these individuals and their departments can navigate complex immigration and visa regulations effectively, reducing risk and uncertainty. By supporting institutional initiatives for international populations, the position contributes to a more inclusive, compliant, and globally connected campus environment. BONUS: APPLICATION ADVICE – Emphasize any direct experience you have advising international students, scholars, faculty, or staff on immigration or regulatory topics, using clear and concrete examples. – Highlight your ability to work with multiple stakeholders, such as academic departments, HR units, or compliance offices, and to explain complex regulations in an accessible way. – Demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, especially in contexts involving government regulations, documentation, or compliance-related advising. – Show awareness of the broader mission of internationalization in higher education and how advising roles support institutional goals. – If applicable, mention experience working in large, decentralized university environments where collaboration and communication are essential.
