Job Details:
The International Student and Scholar Advisor provides guidance and support to international students and scholars in various areas, such as immigration, employment, taxes, and government regulations. They also serve as the Designated School Official for the F-1 program and Alternate Responsible Officer for the J-1 program. Additionally, the Advisor assists with orientation and other cross-cultural programming events and helps manage the technology necessary for the operation of ISSS.

Responsibilities include reviewing and organizing admissions documentation, issuing initial certificates of eligibility for incoming international students, processing immigration documents, maintaining accurate records of advising encounters, and ensuring compliance with federal regulations associated with SEVIS. The Advisor also provides information to UNC staff, faculty, and community members regarding regulations governing international students and scholars. They evaluate emergency loan applications, prepare appeals and special requests to government agencies, and assist in maintaining the ISSS website. The Advisor must stay current with government regulations and international events that impact foreign students and scholars.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have a relevant post-Baccalaureate degree or a relevant Bachelor’s degree with at least 1 year of relevant experience. They must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent resident as required by federal regulations. Thorough knowledge of federal regulations regarding international students and scholars, as well as proficiency in complex regulations and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary. The Advisor should also possess sensitivity to other cultures, have a high level of organization, accuracy, and attention to detail, and be skilled in data entry, database tools, and technology. An ability to work in a team environment is also required.
