OVERVIEW The Study Abroad Program Director at Southern Illinois University’s Center for International Education leads the planning, development, and administration of the university’s study abroad portfolio. Based in Carbondale, Illinois, this role combines strategic program development with operational oversight and institutional representation. The position plays a central role in expanding international opportunities while ensuring effective coordination, safety, and academic integrity. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES – Initiate, develop, and manage study abroad programs for the university – Oversee budgeting and financial aspects of study abroad programs – Recruit and support faculty involved in study abroad programming – Manage student selection processes for study abroad participation – Coordinate logistical arrangements related to study abroad programs – Provide leadership and supervision to study abroad staff and faculty – Manage exchange programs with partner institutions – Coordinate international scholarship programs – Serve as the university’s international representative – Promote health and safety measures for students, faculty, and staff participating in study abroad – Supervise advisors who assist students with study, work, and travel opportunities abroad REQUIREMENTS WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS Study abroad programs are a critical component of a university’s international engagement and student development strategy.
