Job Title: International Student and Scholar Support Specialist
Department: International Student and Scholar Office
University: University of Nebraska – Lincoln

The International Student and Scholar Support Specialist is responsible for providing administrative and support services to international and visiting scholars who are engaged in academic or professional/research activities at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This position requires expertise in advising and support, particularly regarding valid immigration status, including H1-B visas and Legal Permanent Residency. The Specialist will serve as a Designated School Official and as an Alternate Responsible Officer for UNL.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

– A bachelor’s degree in a student services or related field, with at least 1 year of experience in an international student and/or scholar services role.
– Knowledge of non-academic advising practices, including cross-cultural, personal, counseling, and immigration matters, in order to effectively serve international students and scholars.
– Ability to read, understand, interpret, and explain immigration laws and regulations.
– A high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
– Effective decision-making skills and the ability to exercise good judgment.
– Willingness to accept responsibility and work in a team-oriented and confidential environment.
– Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex information.
– Demonstrated success in working and communicating effectively with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
– Must be a U.S. citizen or a U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident in compliance with federal regulations for Primary/Designated School Officials (PDSO/DSO) and Alternate/Responsible Officers (RO/ARO).

Preferred Qualifications:

– A master’s degree in a student services or related field, or equivalent experience in international education.
– Experience using a database management system for international students and scholars, such as ISSM.
– Familiarity with U.S. immigration laws and regulations.
– Knowledge of software programs like the student information system SAP and SUNAPSIS.
– Familiarity with the University’s policies and procedures.
