The Haslam College of Business (HCB) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is currently accepting applications for a full-time Assistant Director position in the International Programs & Study Abroad (IPSA) department. This exempt position reports to the Director of IPSA and will be responsible for providing leadership and oversight of services to students interested in studying abroad, as well as supporting faculty working with study abroad students. The Assistant Director will supervise the day-to-day operations of the Office of IPSA and the program coordinator staff. Additionally, they will contribute to the development of strategies and processes for internationalization within the Haslam College of Business. Responsibilities include supervising program coordinator staff, organizing office resources, marketing and promoting IPSA programming, planning and recruiting students for study abroad programs, advising students on program options and credit procedures, and providing academic advising and curricular planning. The Assistant Director will also exercise discretion and independent judgment in implementing risk management procedures for study abroad programs, represent the college and university to foreign partners, and identify scholarship and grant opportunities for study abroad programs and students.

Responsibilities:

International Program Supervision and Administration:

– Supervise IPSA Program Coordinators to ensure smooth day-to-day operations, including scheduling, advising, and program promotion.
– Oversee preparation of students for studying abroad, including assistance with applications, maintaining information resources, arranging visas, and making travel arrangements. Provide support services before, during, and after education abroad experiences.
– Serve as a study abroad program faculty leader, ensuring well-organized, safe, and academically-sound experiences for credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing courses.

Program Promotion/Marketing:

– Recruit students in person and through various media.
– Develop marketing/branding strategy and materials for HCB faculty-led and approved study abroad programs, including communication of curricular options specific to business education.
– Coordinate student presentations to promote study abroad participation.
– Maintain the international program and study abroad website.

Program Resources:

– Serve as a resource for faculty, staff, and other offices regarding programs and policies.
– Coordinate scholarship promotion and serve on scholarship committees.
– Stay updated on funding opportunities for students and programs.

Academic Advising and Program Advancement:

– Provide academic advising to students planning to study abroad, including program selection and determining course equivalencies.
– Offer individual and team academic advising during freshman orientation and collaborate on curriculum audits.
– Make recommendations for the addition or discontinuation of academic programs.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications and Experience:

– At least five years of full-time experience in international education, student services, academic advising, international engagement, or a related field.
– Prior supervisory experience, including with student staff.
– Master’s and/or terminal degree in a relevant field.

Desired Qualifications and Experience:

– Public speaking experience.
– Proficiency in a foreign language.
– Experience living, working, and/or studying abroad.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Required:

– Staff supervision and office management skills.
– Working knowledge of higher education global programs, standards, requirements, and practices.
– Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage time effectively.
– Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion while implementing program goals and policies.
– Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with individuals from culturally-diverse backgrounds.
– Strong written and oral communication skills.
– Ability to work periodic evening and weekend hours.
– Ability to travel internationally.

Preferred:

– Previous supervisory experience.
– Public speaking experience.
– Experience living or studying abroad.
– Proficiency in a foreign language.
